Verruca treatment

Verruca's are caused by a virus, the human papilloma virus. It is the same virus that causes warts, so a verruca is simply a wart on the foot. Treatment varies depending on various factors, e.g., Type, size, number, location, age of patient, patients’ occupation etc. At Orrell Chiropody Practice we offer various treatments to suit you, and the type of verruca.

*Verruca treatment prices vary dependent on the number and type of treatment required.

Biomechanical assessments

In a biomechanical assessment, your podiatrist assesses and analyses the way your body functions during the gait cycle (the way in which you walk). Abnormalities in the gait cycle can be the primary cause of many aches and pains, particularly in the sportsperson. These analyses can identify:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Overpronation
  • Leg length discrepancies
  • Shin splints
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Tendonitis
  • Postural problems
  • Causes of poor performance

Once any issues have been identified, we can recommend the appropriate treatment.

Nail surgery FAQs

  • Do I Need To Be Referred By My Doctor?

No. simply telephone us, and you will be given an appointment to suit you. If the problem is causing you a lot of pain and you think you may require surgery or a local anaesthetic, then please inform our reception staff and we will give you an immediate appointment, after hours that day if necessary. Here at Orrell Chiropody Practice we aim to please and give you the best possible care asap.

  • How Are Deformities Corrected?

Usually only the troublesome sides of the nail are removed, as is the part of the nail bed that is responsible for the growth of that part of the nail. ( partial nail avulsion ) This means that the offending sides do not grow again, leaving a slightly thinner nail. Here at Orrell Chiropody Practice we pay particular attention to the aesthetics, and often it is not noticeable that surgery has been performed.

  • Trauma Or Incorrect Cutting

Often the problem is not recurrent and has been caused by a one-off trauma, e.g., Tight shoes or an object falling onto the toe.

This may be very painful and have a swelling that prevents your podiatrist from effecting treatment. Here at Orrell Chiropody Practice we can give you a local anaesthetic, allowing your podiatrist to treat this pain free. Often it may be necessary to remove the side of the nail (partial nail avulsion), or the entire nail, (total nail avulsion ), but not the nail bed. This means that the nail, or the side of the nail will grow back normally.

  • Local Anaesthesia In Nail Surgery

This involves two injections at the base of the toe, and not at the site of the inflammation and pain. A mild discomfort is felt, but this will pass quickly as the toe numbs. The treatment will not begin until the patient feels no pain.

At Orrell Chiropody Practice we will try our best to put the patient at ease and reduce any stress or worries you may have.

  • How Long Will The Surgery Last?

The surgery will usually last only 15-20 minutes, but you will usually be in the surgery for approx. 30-45 minutes to allow sufficient time for the anaesthetic to work, and for preparation.

  • Will It Be Painful After Surgery?

Advances in techniques, local anaesthetics and pain killers now mean that patients have a high level of success with much less pain. Generally speaking, there is very little discomfort on the day of the operation, or during the healing period. Any pain is usually easily controlled by paracetamol, ibuprofen or neurofen (do not use aspirin or products that contain aspirin, as this will causes bleeding).

At Orrell Chiropody Practice we advise that you rest with your foot/feet elevated for a few hours after the operation. You should be able to return to work the following day, dependant of course on the type of work you do. It is also advisory that your footwear is spacious enough to accommodate the dressing, and not cause pressure which may cause discomfort.

  • What Happens After The Surgery?

Here at Orrell Chiropody Practice we will give you further appointments over the next week or so where we will change the dressings and monitor the healing lesion. You must keep the dressings dry.
